The Wave is a sandstone rock formation located in Arizona, United States, near its northern border with Utah. The formation is situated on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes in the Paria Canyon-Vermilion Cliffs Wilderness of the Colorado Plateau. The formation is well-known among hikers and photographers for its colorful, undulating forms and the difficult hike required to reach it.
The Wave is located very close to the Utah-Arizona border about half way between Kanab, Utah, and Page, Arizona. It is in the north section of Coyote Buttes, between Paria Canyon and Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. Wire Pass Road leads to the trail head. It is a photographer's dream with its baroque bands of red, pink, yellow and white Navajo sandstone arching around ancient stone chutes. It has stripes of litchified eolian laminae but that just means that its rock layers are made of windblown sand. As the wind patterns changed, different sand dunes blew across the southwest desert, cementing into the striations that we now see.
The BLM protects this beautiful terrain from the harms of excessive human intervention with a permit system that allows only 20 visitors per day to make the six mile hike to this unique area. With upwards of 150,000 applications annually, the opportunity to experience The Wave in person is quite limited. I was fortunate enough to be able to visit this remarkable landscape feature several years ago when it was less known to the general public.
